  Organizing Thought of the Day

This Can Help You Feel Refreshed and Energetic


A few days ago, my 17-year old came home from school, plopped herself on the sofa, and fell asleep. She has been waking up early for an AP prep course in school, she's in school for the school day, and then she comes home and works a few nights a week as well. Luckily, she's a good sleeper, but sometimes the extra hours and typical school stress catch up with her.

She napped for about 20 minutes...and woke up refreshed and energetic again.

Catching a few ZZZs can actually be very good for your brain and provide your body some much-needed recovery. That being said, the length of your nap matters. When not done properly, it can actually be counterproductive.

For adults, very long naps can interfere with cognition, and cause the inability to sleep well at night.

Here are a few keys for successful napping:

1. Set a wake alarm. Studies have proven that the best naps for people are right at around 20 minutes. 30 minutes tops. If you're going to nap, set an alarm to wake you up around the 20 or 30 minute mark.

2. Nap early. If you're going to nap, try doing so halfway between when you wake up and the time you plan to go to bed. For most adults, this is usually between 1:00 and 4:00. For anyone who works during the day, napping at this time likely isn't in the cards for you, but in this case, you may want to take a few brain breaks during the day, rest your eyes when you have that opportunity, and try to get around 8 hours of sleep daily.

3. Cool, dark, and quiet. When trying to find the ideal place for a nap, a cool, dark, quiet place is your best bet.

4. Don't feel guilty. While I don't normally nap, when I feel like my mind and body calls for it, I do so without guilt. Listen to your body and catch a few Zzzzzzs when you need to slow down for a quick power nap.
