  Organizing Thought of the Day

Waiting for the Organizing Inspiration to Strike?

Since you're a subscriber to this newsletter, you know I send an organizing-related newsletter out every single day. Many folks have asked me where I find my inspiration (and ideas) to write daily. I always respond the same way and tell them what I DON'T DO. I don't sit around waiting for the inspiration to strike. Why? Because if I did, there's no way you'd hear from me every day.

Have you ever heard of the artist Chuck Close? He is an American artist noted for his highly inventive techniques used to paint the human face and is best known for his large-scale Photo-realist portraits. He once said, 'Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.' I love that...and it's so true.

Waiting and hoping for that magical moment...when everything seems perfect, isn't a good strategy. Mainly because those magical moments are far and few between.

So, instead of waiting for inspiration to strike, I proactively inspire myself. I may make something I love doing dependant on finishing whatever task I'm working on. I may read or listen to something inspirational. I may research what others have done...and put my own spin on it. I may step outside for a breath of fresh air, or a quick walk, to help increase my energy. I may call a relative or friend for a boost of motivation.

You get the idea. Be proactive in your own inspiration. Work on doing this, practice it daily, and you'll be inspired more often...which means you'll be more productive as well. Sure...that magical moment of inspiration will strike every now and then. When it does, take full advantage of it.

In the meantime, create your own daily inspiration. It will help you get through a household task, a work project, a letter you've been putting aside for weeks, a book you have to read for work or school, that basement organizing project, or whatever it is you have to complete. Also remember that finding that inspiration is easier if you break down whatever you have to do into smaller, more manageable steps.

Finally, the actual accomplishment of something is often inspiration in itself, so keep track of your successes in a journal...and use that as a motivational tool as well.
