  Organizing Thought of the Day

Organizing-Focused to Reduce Stress

Everyone has stress. Our bodies are designed to experience it as well as react to it. When something changes in our lives and we find ourselves in a new situation, good or bad, our bodies produce physical and mental responses. That very normal reaction is known as stress.

Stress is often thought of in a negative manner. On the contrary, it can actually be positive in some cases. For instance, positive stress (also known as eustress) is moderate or normal psychological stress that is beneficial for the experience. This type of stress often occurs with a happy event that is a fairly big deviation from our normal day-to-day lives, like an upcoming wedding, party, or vacation.

The problem with stress is when it is constant...when you don't have a rest from it. This is called chronic stress and it could have detrimental effects on us, both physical, emotional, and behavioral.

April 1 marks the beginning of Stress Awareness Month. It has been celebrated since 1992...but I think we can all agree that, since the start of the global pandemic, coupled with political and social unrest, it's important to focus on stress-reduction more than ever.

There are many ways to reduce stress in our lives. Here are three that are organizing-focused:

1. Reduce visual 'noise.' Have you ever gone into Times Square in New York City? I worked in New York for 10 years and walked through that area every single day. There are TONS (and I mean TONS) of lights, billboards, signs, storefronts, activity...and other visual noise. It can be overwhelming and even frustrating to be there for long periods of time. Your home should be your haven...a peaceful place where you can relax, rest, and re-energize for all of your tomorrows. If you have visual noise at home...lots of clutter and/or chaos... that's going to become overwhelming and frustrating, and will continually increase your levels of stress. By starting to get rid of the clutter, you'll also be decreasing stress.

2. Streamline your TO DOs. Most of us have 'stuff' to do, whether it's working, taking care of kids or grandkids, shopping and running errands, helping out at church, caring for pets, taking care of our lawn or snow shoveling, cooking and cleaning, handling our finances and taxes...the list can be unending. Streamline your TO DOs whenever you can so that they don't overtake every waking moment of your schedule. For instance, there may be tools (air fryers, slow cookers, tax software, email automation, etc.) or services (online shopping, home cleaning, lawn maintenance, etc.) that can help you save time and energy. Maybe you live in a cold area and your winter TO DOs are many...this may be time to move someplace warmer so you can say goodbye to those tasks. Perhaps you have family members who can take over some of your TO DOs? Maybe some of your TO DOs no longer have to be done? It's always a good idea to be on top of what you're doing, and streamline and eliminate whatever you can to help you reduce stress in your life.

3. Think 'good systems.' A (good) system is a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network. When you give each item you own a specific and appropriate home, that's a good system because it allows you to find what you need when you need it. When you immediately get your appointments into your calendar and you set reminders for each, that's a good system because you'll be able to remember what you have to do and when. When you donate clutter on a consistent schedule, that's a good system because by doing so, your clutter won't become overwhelming. Assess the actions you take every day to be sure they are highly likely to lead to positive outcomes.
