How I Cleared a Lot of Space
|
I just love organizing success stories. This one was posted by a GON Reader, Pat
Pieratte, on my Get Organized Now! Goodbye Clutter Support Group a bit ago, and
I just had to share. Here goes...
Since I have sold lots of stuff in 23 garage sales over the last four years, I
had quite a few empty bins, although I have sold or given away quite a few along
the way. I saw how much space they were taking up in my shed and decided to
advertise them on the local Facebook sales pages yesterday, for $3 each. I
did save a few bins of each size to help with my organizing and selling process.
This proved to be a very popular sale, and about 50 people expressed interest. I
gave out my address as people messaged me, and had to stop after 11 people were
scheduled to come in the morning! Only one lady actually showed up, but she
bought 20 bins!
I then scheduled about 10 more people to come in the afternoon, and sold another
22 bins, for a total of $127! So I cleared a lot of space and earned some money
in the process!
That is a whole lot of clutter gone. Imagine how much lighter Pat's home
feels...and Pat deserves a pat on the back for all of her efforts!
Many folks have been asking me about Covid-safe rummage sales, so here are a
few tips focused on that subject:
1. Limit the gathering size. Depending on the space you have, limit your
shoppers to 10, 15, or 20 people at a time...and only if your town is currently
allowing you to do this. Check first before you advertise your sale. Have a plan
for crowd control...drawing waiting area lines with chalk, counting heads, etc.
2. Host the sale outside. Rather than bringing people into your garage
this year, host the sale on your driveway and front lawn, in the open air.
3. Post signs about being respectful of each person's space. Post simple
signs that say, 'Please distance 6 feet from others...thank you!'
4. Set up two sanitizing stations. All you need is a surface and some
hand sanitizer. You might also provide disposable masks in case someone needs
one. Don't forget to sanitize your own hands in between transactions.
5. Go digital. If you'd like, you may considering offering a digital
payment option, like Pay Pal, to your customers. But realize that not everyone
will want to pay this way. Still, offering a no-contact payment method is a good
thing to have the ability to do during a pandemic.
6. If you're not ready to host an outside sale, you may go the route of Pat
(the GON Reader above) and host a Facebook sale. You take photos of the
items you'd like to sell, post them on your personal Facebook page or a Facebook
sell site, accept payment digitally, and leave the items on your doorstep for
pick up. No physical contact required.
