  Organizing Thought of the Day

An Unusual, But Effective, Organizing Tool

Ask me about organizing tools and some items that immediately come to mind are storage containers, drawer dividers, calendars, label makers, and baskets. Here's one I haven't thought of before, but is a very effective tool for organized, calm, peaceful relationships (romantic and non-romantic) in anyone's life.

My teenage daughter, Amanda, recently purchased a very cute stuffed animal, called The Original Reversible Octopus Plushie . I really didn't think anything of this because Amanda has loved stuffed animals all her life. It is a happy octopus...BUT, it can be turned inside out to instantly reveal a mad/sad octopus. The idea is that you can use either 'mood' to show your feelings to someone else...a friend, spouse, teacher, etc. without having to say a word.

Some people have no problem expressing their feelings to others, but for those who are more reluctant and tend to hide their feelings, this tool can be a big help...to the owner of the octopus, and to those connected to the person with the octopus.

Amanda mostly bought it because it's just adorable. BUT, the idea behind this plushie is actually pretty brilliant.

Let's say you're having a bad day...and your spouse (or sibling, or parent, etc.) isn't aware of that. The other person may say something to you that causes more sadness/anger, etc. But, if you're displaying your frown-y octopus, they'll be aware that something is up...and have the opportunity to say something nice, cheerful, and/or supportive.

After doing some research, I'm pleased to report that this plushie has prevented escalated bad/sad moods, has saved many a relationship...and really, who wouldn't smile (and automatically be in a better mood) upon seeing this cute creature?!

Of course, this concept can be applied without the octopus if you so choose. Drawing a smiley or frown-y face on a sheet of paper, and posting it prominently, would be effective as well.

Effective organization applies to all areas of our lives...our closets, drawers, calendars, home, workplace, meals, hobbies...and so much more including our connections with others. And when it comes to that connectedness, I'm all for whatever we can do or use for calm, thoughtful, loving, kind relationships.
