Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Stop Waiting for Things to Be Just Right
|
Ah, spring. It's when everyone who lives on my neighborhood block comes out of
hibernation. I'm only half kidding. Most of us don't like winter and I don't see
most of my neighbors during the winter months, except for a quick wave as we
grab our mail from our curbside mailboxes or from our car windows driving in or
out of our garages. I finally had the opportunity to chat for a few moments with
one of my neighbors (I can't begin to tell you how nice that was!) and she
expressed that she has been feeling down for months, and how good it was to be
outside again.
As we all know, between social distancing, feeling isolated, and other effects
of the pandemic, getting into a slump and focusing on the negative has been an
ongoing, easy thing to fall into for quite some time.
While each day brings new hope and light, we're not necessarily 'back to normal'
yet. BUT we don't have to sit around and wait for everything to be 'just right.'
A bit of proactivity...and we can replenish that joy in our hearts and those
smiles on our faces.
One way to do this is to take a giant step back from the big picture and focus
on the little things around us instead. Most of us have little control over the
big stuff. We have a lot more control over the smaller things in our day.
Stop rushing around in the morning. Enjoy (truly enjoy) your morning coffee
or tea, while reading The Bible or something motivational. Take the time to
listen to the birds outside your window. Take 10 minutes to stretch. Go for
a morning walk. If you're short on time, try to wake up a few moments earlier.
Starting the day doing something for YOU is time well spent.
Play upbeat music on your way to work...or while you're taking care of your
morning chores. Doing so always elevates my mood. I avoid talk radio, TV talk
shows, and any sort of news in the morning. I refuse to allow whatever is going
on in the world...and the news almost always focuses on the negative...to start
my day off in a stressful way.
I love the look and scent of fresh-cut flowers, so I make a point to treat
myself to them weekly. I've been buying them from the store, but soon I'll be
able to cut some from my garden.
Get outside into the fresh air and say 'hey' to your neighbors. Six feet apart
isn't that far away and we can all use some human contact and friendly small
talk now and then.
It doesn't matter what you decide to do. Just make sure that you do SOMETHING
every day that makes you happy. Maybe for you it's having a little bite of
chocolate. Perhaps it's a daily walk by yourself through a scenic area. Maybe it's
changing into your favorite comfy pants after a long day at work. Maybe it's
taking the extra few moments to prepare a nice meal and enjoy it at the dining
room table...using the 'good dishes' and cloth napkins.
Whatever it may be, just do it. We do not always have the power to change what
is going on in the world around us. But we do have the power to make our own
personal worlds more joyful.
Wishing you and your family a beautiful, joyful day...and a glorious Easter
Sunday for everyone celebrating this special day!

different this year...or may feel (at least somewhat) back to normal. Rather
than focusing on the differences, try something new that you can call a
tradition year after year starting from today? Maybe you can write your favorite
scriptures on painted Easter eggs? Perhaps you and your family members can make
a craft together before your meal?
