  Organizing Thought of the Day

Hit the 'Reset' Button to Boost Your Productivity

Every once in a while, my computer starts acting funny. Sometimes it will freeze up and completely stop working or it will randomly boot me off of the Internet for no apparent reason. Generally, I find that if I just restart it, it goes back to working just fine.

In much the same way, I find that I can be like my computer. Sometimes I find myself moving more slowly than usual or not wanting to work at all. Usually this happens near the end of a long or unusually busy work week. I find myself getting sluggish and my energy and motivation tends to take a serious, although not completely unexpected, nosedive.

Much as our computers may need an occasional reset, we too can benefit from having the same. Sometimes we get bogged down with the ins and outs of life and just need to 'reset' ourselves in order to gain both our energy and productivity back. For a lot of us, this is probably where our scheduled days off fit in.

Think of your average work week. For many of us, that is five days worth of having to get up and head to our jobs...maybe even six days for some folks. We have constant responsibilities and have to be at a certain place at a certain time. For those of us who don't like Mondays, it is probably because we know it is another start of five days of work before we can see some time off for ourselves.

Even if you don't work outside the home, you can likely still benefit from a reset. For instance, perhaps you run your own business from home, or are a stay- at-home parent of one or more kids, or are caring for an aging parent, or live alone and have many tasks and chores but have other challenges, like chronic pain. Whatever your situation, daily living (and all that comes with it) can sometimes be exhausting.

This is where the importance of days off comes in. We all need some down time to regroup and refocus. In order to reset we need to make sure that we have some relaxation time built into our week. In order to make sure that this happens we all need to set some time aside to do the things that need to be done but that we don't necessarily want to spend all day, on our days off, doing. There are ways to jump start your week so that things that you need to get done outside of work can and will get done without adding additional stress to your week.

The key for me is to find a time during the day to complete the little jobs that, on their own, aren't a lot...but if they get ignored can add up and make my TO DO list longer and longer. This may include meal planning, vacuuming, paying bills, or any of those little jobs that quite honestly don't take that long to complete...as long as you don't allow them to pile up.

For example, spending fifteen minutes per day going through email is a lot easier than letting them accumulate over the course of a week and then having to spend considerably more time later reading and responding to them. Doing one load of laundry today is much more bearable than waiting it out and then having the weekend hit and realizing that you now have five loads to do. Vacuuming one room today and one room tomorrow means that you won't have an entire house to tackle on your coveted day off.

You see where I'm going with this? For me it is quite simple: Although I don't always feel like doing these little jobs during the week, my reward is that once my weekend hits I am not bombarded with these little household tasks that I had put on the back burner. Instead, I do a little bit at a time and avoid the weekend avalanche of uncompleted chores. This then allows me the free time to do the more fun things that I want to do which, in turn, allows me to reset and also re-energizes me for the upcoming week.

I guess that old saying of 'don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today' really does have some merit. We all work hard. We also need to allow ourselves, much like our computers, an occasional reset so that we can be more productive overall and continue working in the most efficient way possible.

When your non-stick pans are scratched, there is a chance the nonstick coating can flake into your food, releasing toxic compounds.
