Ask Maria: How to Stop Hundreds of Catalogs

A GON Reader Asked:

How can I stop 100 + catalogs being mailed to my house? I now have to call each one. Thank you!

Kathlene V.

Maria Gracia Responded:

Kathlene, That project will definitely take a bit of time, but it's worth pursuing for sure...especially if you rarely purchase from catalogs. What usually happens, when you request one catalog from one company, your contact information gets sold and you end up on lots of other company catalog mailing lists.

Reduce the current volume and stop NEW mailings from starting. These two steps work, but can take up to 90 days for you to begin seeing a reduction:

a) Create an account at dmachoice.org. This is the Direct Marketing Association's consumer website. When you do, you'll have the option to opt out of catalogs, credit card offers, and more. You will have to pay a small fee for this service (last I checked it was $2), but you will have access to this service for 10 years.

b) A company called Epsilon maintains a marketing database, known as Abacus. That database is used by many product catalog companies. Write to them to remove your name if you don't want ANY unsolicited catalogs. But know that doing so may cause you to stop receiving those you DO want...it's an all or nothing service...you can't pick and choose. So, if you'd like to take this more drastic step, you can email optout@epsilon.com or write a note to this address, asking to opt you out of all future catalog mailings:

Epsilon
Attention: Privacy
P.O. Box 1478
Broomfield, CO 80038

If I were you, I'd start with a and b above, recycling those catalogs that you don't want. As long as you don't purchase from any of them, some companies will automatically remove you. And, in 90 days, you hopefully will begin to see a reduction.

Once those 90 days have passed, you can then call whatever catalog companies you're still receiving and ask them to remove you from their mailing list.

In addition, and this is very important, whenever you ask a company for information, also say or write, 'Please do not sell my name or address.' This goes for catalogs, warranty cards, contests you're entering, etc. Hopefully, they will put you into their database properly and they will abide by your wishes and not sell your contact information. But some still will, so be careful who you do business with. If you're filling out an online form, before you SUBMIT, pay attention. If there's a checkbox (that may already be checked when filling out online forms) be sure you know what you're agreeing to.

Good luck! Hope this helps and hoping to hear from you after 90 days to find out where you are with this project.
