  Organizing Thought of the Day

Cringe Free Bathroom Cleaning

With all of the rooms in the house that need to be cleaned, I can say with 100% certainty that the one that is my least favorite is the bathroom. It's not like the bedroom where I need to do just a little dusting and vacuuming. Instead it involves the energy-required tasks of scrubbing the shower, bath, and toilet, mopping the floor, and continuously cleaning marks off of the mirror. In my years of tackling this particular room, I have come up with ways to make this not-so-fun job easier and less time-consuming than it used to be.

My method of defense is to keep up with it on a daily basis.

a) I keep a container of Lysol disinfecting spray in the bathroom cabinet and have a roll of paper towels, displayed on a paper towel holder, on the bathroom counter. Once a day, using these two items, I clean the sink, the bathroom countertop, and the surfaces of the toilet bowl.

b) I keep a spray bottle of Windex glass cleaner and a cleaning towel under the sink. Every few days, I wipe down the mirror, faucets, and light switch. The towel gets tossed into the wash once a week.

c) In order to keep the toilet fresh between cleanings, every evening I add Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner to the toilet, allow it to sit for 5 minutes, and then swish the toilet clean with a toilet brush. I wedge the brush under the toilet seat, allowing the water to drip from the brush into the toilet, for a few minutes before returning it to its holder.

d) Although this one may sound strange, along with my shampoo and conditioner, I also keep a Magic Eraser in my shower. Most days, while I am showering and waiting for my conditioner to do its thing, I will grab the Magic Eraser and wipe the interior of my shower. It really is easier than trying to scrub the shower from outside and much like the sink, the daily wipe down keeps the soap scum from accumulating. I then follow up with a daily shower spray to help keep the interior cleaner between scrubbings. (Note: Magic Erasers are wonderful...but not for all surfaces. Check if it's safe for yours before using.)

I find that staying on top of these bathroom cleaning jobs every day makes it so much faster and easier when I decide to dive in and opt for a deep clean. In fact, my deep clean (once a week) doesn't even include the toilet, sink, or shower because those are kept clean every day. My deep clean day adds in the tub (my tub is separate from my shower...and doesn't get used every day, but gets dusty), the floor, and dusting off the cabinets and light fixtures.

Keep in mind that a day's worth of dirt is ALWAYS easier to clean than a week or two's worth. Staying on top of these cleaning jobs will ensure that your bathroom is always fairly clean, and deep clean day goes a lot faster and smoother.
