Ask Maria: Question About Recipe Clippings

A GON Reader Asked:

Maria,

I consider myself an organized person, but I am stumped. I decided to clean out my recipe clippings (and the miscellaneous papers that inevitably get mixed in with them).

My original plan was to type the ones I knew I would use, save the file to my computer and toss the clippings. But, I have several handwritten recipes from friends and family that are quite old--some were passed down from my mother, and I really do not want to toss the original papers.

I also have some publications from companies like Betty Crocker, Kraft, etc., that are small pamphlets and date back to the 1950's.

I'm not sure how to organize all of this and maintain the integrity of the originals. I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter as I always find your suggestions helpful.

Thank you,

Ramona Stacey

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Ramona,

Thanks so much for your question. Here's what I do:

I actually have two methods for storing and accessing recipes. For those I find online, I just save them to Pinterest. I have Pinterest folders for Main Dishes, Side Dishes, Desserts, etc.

BUT, for 'recipes on paper' from my mother, magazine clippings, and those cute, little pamphlets you mentioned, I keep those in a Recipe Binder. I have sections in my 3-ring binder for recipe categories. To make sections I simply use tab dividers. Then, in each section, I have sheet protectors. The paper/card recipes simply get slipped inside a sheet protector.

Sometimes, I'll cut a recipe out of a magazine and tape it to a sheet of paper...and then slip that paper into the sheet protector. BUT (and this is an important 'but') only if there isn't recipe information printed on the back of the clipping. Same goes for handwritten recipes on index cards. In doing this, sometimes you can fit two or more recipes on one page.

If I have pamphlets or thin booklets of recipes, those can easily fit into a sheet protector as well.

Also, I have a lined sheet of paper in a sheet protector at the beginning of every category in my Recipe binder. On each, I list recipes in my cookbooks so I can easily find them. For example:

Lentil Chili, Forks Over Knives, P. 128

White Lightening Chili, Rachel Ray, 30 Minute Meals, P 142

Using the sheet protectors and tab dividers ensures all of your 'recipes on paper and index cards' are organized, eliminates the need to type those recipes, and maintains the integrity of those more personal recipe cards from mom, grandma, and other important people in your life.

Hope this helps.
