Good and Bad Ways to Use Sticky Notes
|
Sticky notes can be great tools for
getting and staying organized...they also can be a huge detriment to effective
organization. It's important to use them properly.
A few wonderful uses for sticky notes are:
Quick reminders: If I want to remember to bring something with me before
exiting my house, I'll often leave a sticky note on the door to remind me. Or,
if I have to make a phone call before starting my work for the day, I'll stick a
sticky note on my computer monitor to remind me to get that task handled.
Temporary Labels: And I really mean temporary...as in, I'm only using
them for the project I'm working on, and then they'll be discarded. For
instance, let's say I have a stack of photos I'm sorting. I may use sticky notes
to delineate three categories of photos: Childhood, Teens, Adult, for example.
Once everything is sorted and in albums or photo boxes, the sticky notes are
discarded.
Driving directions or someone's address: I may jot a quick address
(and/or driving directions) on a sticky note if I need to drop something off at
someone's home. That being said, if it's an address I plan to return to in the
future, that information gets transferred to my phone contacts.
Bookmarks: Sometimes I want to refer to certain pages in books (like
cookbooks) and will use a sticky note so I can quickly jump to that page.
Quick love Notes: Giving and receiving love notes...posted to the
bathroom mirror, stuck in a lunch box, etc. is fun!
Here's where using sticky notes, however, becomes ineffective:
Using them to hold and display sensitive information (such as passwords,
credit card numbers, etc.) and sticking that note somewhere prominent where
prying eyes can see them.
Using too many of them...like sticky notes all over your computer
monitor, refrigerator, desk, etc. When you have a sea of sticky notes
everywhere, the important ones become 'invisible.'
Using them for EVERYTHING. Sticky notes should never be your 'main' form
of information-holding or note-taking. For the most part, they're used for very
quick TO DOs and reminders...and are meant to be discarded fairly quick.
Important phone numbers and addresses should be entered into your paper or
digital address book. Today's TO DOs should be on a paper or digital TO DO list.
Your appointments should be entered into your paper or digital planner/calendar.
Using them as permanent labels for file folders. Sticky notes stuck in
the center of file folders are not easily seen in a filing cabinet.
Two more important notes:
1. Be careful. The sticky part, on sticky notes, can become unsticky and easily
lost.
2. The second you place something larger on top of them, they become cleverly
hidden. So, be very careful about placing sticky notes on horizontal surfaces
where you could inadvertently place something on top of them.
