Fabulous Organizing Letter from a GON Reader

Two Weeks and Tons of Progress
Dear Maria,
I really appreciate all your tips on organizing. Especially, when the task
seems daunting!
I recently spent two weeks going over to my mother's house just helping her
organize and separate her photos and other memorabilia. She recently turned 86,
and I didn't want to be left to organize boxes and boxes of pictures, without
her knowledge regarding who the people in the photos were.
She had purchased nice photo boxes for less than $2 from Michael's on sale
for each child and adult grandchild. We lined them up, put a
name on each box, and started the process of going through the pictures, tossing
each child's photos of themselves in their own box. If we came across sheets of
uncut school photos, we would give the large ones to the person who's picture it
was, and cut up the smaller ones to divide among the children first, then the
grandkids.
School program flyers, graduation programs, etc. were given to the child it
belonged to. If there were extras, we put them in that child's children's (the
grandkids) boxes. We sorted 13 boot-sized boxes and a large box about 2' x 2' x
2-1/2'!
It was a job that took a lot of time, but I figured it wouldn't get easier the
older Mom got. So, I bit the bullet and did it. I thought we were all done, but
she found 3 more boot-sized boxes. So, I'm taking a break for a while, then will
go back and plow through those.
For the large pictures, we started a large Manila envelope to put the 11 inch
x 14 inch photos in. We set all the family heirloom pictures aside and she is
labeling on the backs of them. We will make copies of those for each child and a
few cousins. I started scanning pictures about 20 years ago, so will be
scanning those that I don't have done to put on flash drives for each person to
have a set that they can print on their own. She will be giving them out to
everyone at Christmas.
I had read articles about Swedish Death Cleaning and talked to her about it for
her household items. I told her the important thing was to ASK my siblings and
the grandkids if they would like a certain item, not tell them she was giving it
to them. We also spent time going through many of her Christmas ornaments. I
took photos of each and sent texts to the adult grandkids to see if they wanted
them. If they did, I started a box for them with their names. There were only
about 5 not taken, so those went in a garage sale box.
The best benefit: I got to spend time with Mom and hear all the stories.
Priceless! Next time, I'll set up the camera!
