  Organizing Thought of the Day

It's Always Easy to Do Something Else

Whether it's chores, work, errands, or a home or work project, there are always things that absolutely, positively need to get done. Some of those tasks are very important (like paying a bill, getting fuel for your car, or being sure you have a meal on the table for dinner). Tasks like that get done most of the time because, if they don't, the neglect will have a fairly major impact on your life.

Not paying a bill could result in you losing your home, for instance. Not getting fuel in your car is going to leave you stranded. Not acquiring food is going to result in starvation.

Other tasks are important, but most of the time are not THAT important--meaning that if they're not done, they'll still be there tomorrow waiting for you. These are tasks like filing papers, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, organizing a junk drawer, or sorting through old photos. Some of these, like not cleaning the bathroom, will EVENTUALLY have a major impact on your life...but, let's face it, they're generally not life-and-death TO DOs if you skip a day or two, a week, or even a month.

These are the tasks that often get put on the backburner.

Still, life is so much nicer when your papers are filed, your home is clean and sanitary, and your drawers and photos are organized. Getting these tasks done results in less chaos, less stress, and more good feelings.

We all know how easy it is to just 'do something else,' even when we're well aware that tasks like these are calling our names. Our paper piles can be staring us in the face while we happily scroll through Pinterest boards. Our dusty surfaces can be begging us to clean them off while we sit, watch TV, and pretend we don't notice.

That's why it's important to use some creative motivation to get these TO DOs done. My system: make something fun that I want to do dependant on getting each TO DO done.

So, while I may want to kick back outside and read a book, I first am sure to get that day's organizing project accomplished.

When I want to be lazy and watch a TV show, I first am sure to get at least three rooms vacuumed (for instance).

You get the idea. Besides, doing this makes the FUN thing even better because it results in TWO fun things:

a) the reward, of course
b) plus, the wonderful feeling of accomplishment!

So, come up with a bunch of things you LOVE doing...and then enjoy them, one by one, AFTER completing a task you have to do. The sequence is a) Do a task and b) Enjoy a reward. It's a great way to get things done, and have some fun!
