Ask Maria: Cleaning Ceramic Tiles
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Maria,
Cleaning ceramic tiles, to me, is the worst! Any ideas to share?
Thank you,
Eileen W.
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Eileen,
Thank you for asking. Your absolute best defense for cleaning ceramic tiles is
to keep them as clean as possible in the first place. The longer they're
neglected, the more time and energy you're going to have to put into cleaning
them. Plus, sand and grit left about may permanently scratch and damage the
surface.
Use a microfiber duster, like a Swiffer,
for daily tidying.
As needed, if there is any sticky residue on the tiles, an expired credit card
can be used to gently scrape it off.
For weekly (or twice-a-week) cleaning, fill a bucket (or your bathroom sink)
with hot water, a half cup of vinegar, and a TINY BIT of dish soap...emphasis on
tiny. If it's a small surface, you'll only need a few drops...increase a bit if
it's a larger surface. Then, either clean with a mop (floors) or by hand
(walls). You're also going to have to follow up with another mopping or hand
cleaning session with plain hot water.
Finally, dry the surface(s) with a clean, dry cloth. Don't air dry...it will
leave spots.
There aren't too many tips to do this differently, except to keep up with it.
And plan something fun afterwards to help make the work you just did a bit
more rewarding.
If you have years of build-up, specifically on the grout, that's going to take a
commercial grout cleaner and a lot more work. Some folks use a paste of baking
soda and water...and a toothbrush. You can actually apply the baking soda paste
to the grout and allow it to sit overnight. You can also use a steam-cleaner.
Or, better yet, get a professional cleaning service to handle this task for you
if it's in your budget.
Finally, don't wear outside shoes in the house. There's a much greater chance
of tracking in dirt and gravel, which makes keeping ceramic tile floors that
much more challenging.
