Self-Care: Top Priority
|
I am a mom. Like so many of you out there, I love what that entails. I am
blessed with having a great, loving family and I love all of the things that
come with that. But one of the things I have learned, since becoming a parent,
is that the needs of others often tend to come before my own. I am not at all
complaining, but just stating a fact. I am guessing that the same is true for
most moms out there. We often put our own wants and needs second to those who
fall under our care.
As time goes on, and children grow, our responsibilities change. Children become
more and more independent and don't rely on us nearly as much as they used to.
Although letting go is tough, it does come with an up side. Where all of our
focus used to be on our children, we can now begin to shift some of that focus
back onto another very important person in our lives: Ourselves.
If it comes right down to it, those closest to us would probably be all for us
making ourselves a priority every now and then. We need to take care of
ourselves as much as we need to take care of those around us. So starting today,
do it. What are the things that you want to do just for YOU and nobody else?
Sometimes it can just be the little things. On occasion, I will order a pizza
for me and only me and put all of the toppings on it that I like, without
consulting anybody around me. Every now and then, I go shopping and only shop
for things for myself without worrying about picking anything up for anybody
else. It could be allowing yourself down time to read that book you've been
dying to read but haven't made time for. I sometimes need to remind myself that
it is okay to do things just for me and to NOT feel guilty about doing so.
Allow yourself a little self care every now and then. Don't always feel like you
need to put others' needs ahead of your own. It is like expecting a car to run
when you hardly ever put gas in it. Eventually it will stop working. Make sure
that you are filling up your own gas tank every once in a while so that you are
able to keep running the way you should and need to...and so that you can
continue to look after all the ones that you love.
