Organizing Thought of the Day

Don't Allow Your Mail to Become Paper Clutter
|
We all receive mail in our mailboxes every day. Because of this daily influx
of paper, it's important to handle it immediately...before it has a fighting
chance of adding to any paper clutter we may already have.
You can either sort it right over the recycling container if you wish...or bring
it in your home, if it's easier to do so, and sort it on a counter or table.
Here are some quick guidelines for typical types of mail.
Junk mail is a no-brainer. Immediately recycle it.
Magazines. As long as they're magazines you ordered and enjoy, place
these where you typically read magazines...in a basket or magazine holder. If
you rarely get to read a magazine you receive, take the time to cancel your
subscription...and then recycle.
Catalogs. For those you want to browse through, place them where you do
your browsing. I look through mine when I'm watching TV, so they get placed in a
tray near that area. For those you don't want to browse through, immediately
recycle. AND, if you no longer wish to receive that catalog, call the company
and ask them to remove you from their mailing list before you do.
Bills: Place bills into your bill paying binder or basket. Recycle any
extras you don't need. I pay my bills online (but I still like to receive the
actual bill in the mail and pay online one-by-one), so the outer and inner
envelopes, as well as any inserts, immediately get recycled.
Coupons: If you're really going to use them, place them in your wallet,
near your grocery list, or in a coupon holder.
Anything that requires a response: This would be invitations, forms that
need to be filled out, papers that require calls you have to make, etc. Take the
action immediately if you can, and then recycle. Otherwise, file in your action
folder or permanent filing cabinet (only if absolutely necessary) for later
