Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Give Me a Break
|
There is probably one thing about elementary school that we can all remember:
Recess. Ask a child in elementary school what their favorite part of the school
day is and I am willing to bet that they will say one of two things...lunch
or recess.
As adults, this may seem like a funny answer, but if you stop and think about
it, it really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. To a child, both lunch and
recess equate to things that they are craving and needing during the school day.
Namely, a break.
As adults, we likely don't have a half hour during the workday when we go
outside and 'play.' Many of us may even see days during which we don't even
allow ourselves the time to drop what we are doing long enough to have a decent,
work-free lunch. Sure, work is important, but it may be time for us all to take
a lesson from 7-year olds and allow ourselves a much needed break during the
day.
Why do kids have recess? Studies have shown that when kids have a break from
academics during the day it actually aids with their learning. Having breaks
helps them be more attentive and gives them the ability to retain more of what
they are learning. If having a short break works for them, imagine what doing
the same can do for you as well.
Although it may seem logical that you will get more work done by skipping lunch
or just working through your whole entire day, resist the urge. Everybody needs
to allow themselves a chance to clear their heads, even for a brief time during
the day. Taking breaks will allow you to 'reboot' and will actually make you
better able to focus and be more productive overall. A little recess may be all
you need to make yourself the best that you can be.
