  Organizing Thought of the Day

Get Into an Organized State of Mind

Today is a good day for a bit of reflection about effective organization. It's easier to 'think organized' and to 'be organized' when you take the time to consider and notice the many examples of good organization around you.

1. Think about the street sign that denotes the name of the street you live on. Imagine if the street you lived on (and the street that everyone else lives on) wasn't labeled. Identifying and labeling are important components of good organization.

2. Consider the retail stores you frequent. Most have a specific opening time and a specific closing time. Imagine if the store opened and closed whenever they wanted to...and never indicated their hours. Being specific and good communication are important components of good organization.

3. Picture your grocery store. Each item is organized by aisle...like-items with like-items. Imagine a grocery store in which nothing was organized and everything was put in random aisles, and placed on random shelves, with no rhyme or reason. Sorting and storing items properly are important components of effective organization.

4. Reflect on the book you're reading. Chances are, it's written in sequential order, broken up by chapters, so you're progressing from the beginning of the book until the end. Imagine the author having all of his or her chapters arranged on a table before publishing, and then not paying any mind to what order the chapters were in before they were bound together. Prioritizing and logical order placement are important components of good organization.

5. Ponder all of the systems at your local pharmacy, and the amount of organization that goes into ensuring all the various medications are clearly labeled, stored in an organized way on the shelves or in the refrigerator, dispensed according to doctor orders, and carefully distributed to the proper person. Paying attention to detail is an important component of good organization.

Your homework today: Write down 5 examples, like I've done above, to get your mind into effective organizing mode. The more you notice it, the more you'll be in 'an organized state of mind.'

___ 2. Make a list of 'extra' home TO DOs. We all have our regular household tasks and chores pretty much ingrained in us. But having a list of the 'extras' that need to be handled, will help you remember to get them done. For instance, perhaps you need to repair a squeaky door, pick up bird seed for the feeders, and clean under the fridge. Get those on a list and cross off each as you complete.

___ 3. Start, or continue, your spring cleaning. Celebrate this season of renewal with a fun Spring Cleaning Challenge. I thought out all of your spring cleaning tasks for you. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my free Spring Cleaning Challenge printable.
