Today is National Take a Chance Day. When I looked it up, I discovered that the origins of this day are unknown. Perhaps the creators simply wanted folks to have a day to put away their inhibitions and do something bold. Then, maybe they took a chance (on the idea of Take a Chance Day) to see if this idea would go viral...and then it did!

I consider myself a careful person...and I rarely jump into anything without thinking it through. I don't take unnecessary risks that could potentially end up with pretty bad circumstances. Still, I do take some chances now and then.

For instance, you'll often see a Powerball ticket on my refrigerator. While we haven't won that lottery (yet), I have won a few hundred bucks on scratch-off tickets a few times in the past 6 months.

I'll try new restaurants I've never been in before...or visit places where I've never traveled.

I'll take a new exercise class that I've never taken before. I may not like it, of course. But then again, I may.

When is the last time you took a chance and tried something new?

Maybe you want to, but you're not sure where to start. The answer to that nearly always comes back to baby-steps.

Maybe you want to change your job? That baby step may begin with you updating your resume.

Perhaps you want to learn CPR. That baby step may begin with you researching CPR classes in your neighborhood.

Maybe you'd like to write a book about your life. That baby step may begin with you buying a notebook and jotting down just one interesting story about yourself.

Sometimes taking a chance won't pan out. But I hold out hope to win that Powerball someday.

Other times, taking a chance will result in something amazing, like you landing a wonderful new job, saving a life because you have the skills you need from CPR class, or finishing up that autobiography to pass on to your grandkids... or a major publisher!

Today is Take a Chance Day. Roll the dice, take that leap of faith, and begin.
