'While most holidays celebrate something that has already happened and is worth remembering, Arbor Day represents a hope for the future. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty - all for a better tomorrow.'

I love that description and I found it on the Arbor Day Foundation's web site. Today, April 30, 2021 is Arbor Day...and it has been celebrated annually since 1872. The main idea of this holiday's creation was very simple: have a day every year specifically set aside for tree planting.

Here are some ways you can celebrate:

1) Plant a tree if you can. Dedicate it to someone.

2) Take a class on tree pruning, planting, etc. Call your local nursery to find out if they have an in-person or virtual class coming up.

3) Organize or get involved in a local park beautification project.

4) Go on a neighborhood tree walk...can you identify the types of trees?

5) Have a picnic under a shady tree.

6) Donate money to a local tree-planting organization.

7) Post words of wisdom about trees on your social media pages (maybe some photos too!)

8) Hike on a forest trail.

9) Give your trees a new layer of nutrient-rich organic mulch.

10) Read The Hidden Life of Trees.
