  Organizing Thought of the Day

How to Proceed Without Getting Overwhelmed

Taking a large job and breaking it down into smaller pieces makes that project less overwhelming, and more likely for the person doing it to continue moving forward until it's completed. So, we come up with the tasks that have to be done, write them down on a sheet of paper, individual index cards, or type them into a computer file, etc. and then begin. But how do we proceed at that point, without getting overwhelmed? Here are some ideas:

a) Choose a time range. One of the easiest ways to proceed, at this point, is to declare how long you're going to work on whatever it is. So, whether you're organizing the garage, starting a home improvement project, doing a report for work, or studying for a math exam, give yourself a time range. 'I'm going to work on one or more of my tasks for the next 30 minutes.' Set a timer. Once the 30 minutes is up, you can take a break and continue after that break if you wish...or stop for today and continue tomorrow with your next time declaration.

b) Choose a task. Another way is to choose one of the tasks you have to do and work on that 'one task only' until it's done. Once the task is done, take a break and choose to continue later, or stop and choose another task tomorrow.

b) Choose a section or topic. Yet another method is to choose a particular section or topic. Examples may be:
--Cleaning a specific area of your garage
--Vacuuming the first floor of your home
--Reading all the chapters in part one of your book
When you've completed all the tasks in a section or within a topic, take a break and continue later, or stop and choose another task tomorrow.

All three of these ideas help you work on 'pieces' that you can complete and feel good about, without getting overwhelmed.
