  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria: How do I organize my clothes closet on a budget?

A GON Reader Asked:

Can you give me tips on organizing my bedroom closet without having to go out and buy expensive materials?

--Norma Taylor

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Norma,

Organizing your closet can absolutely be done without spending a whole lot of money. I'm glad you asked. Here are just a few tips to get you started:

1. The less you have, the less you have to worry about. Most people only wear 20% of the clothes in their closets, and have way more than is truly necessary. Pare down to enough outfits that will get you through a few weeks. Choose your favorites. Donate the rest.

2. Use matching hangers. When your hangers match, it will instantly have a more consistent, less-chaotic look. You can get a whole set of quality hangers (a 48-pack) for around $20. For pants, I like space-saving hangers.

3. Organize by category...and then color. In other words, keep like-items together (all pants together, all skirts together, all shirts together, etc.). Then, within each category, organize by color. So, for shirts, start with white, move to beige, move to yellow, then to orange, and work yourself all the way to black...lightest to darkest.

4. Use hooks. Accessory hooks are awesome for hanging belts, scarves, handbags, etc.

5. Make effective use of shelf space. If you happen to have shelf space, use it to stack items like sweaters, floppy beach hats, etc. Keep like-items with like-items. You can certainly use baskets or containers if you prefer more of an 'everything in' look or inexpensive shelf dividers to keep items separated and neat.
