Building an Organized Wardrobe
|
A few days ago, I stopped at an outlet shopping center in my area and bought a
new shirt from Talbots. It is a summery shirt, with blue and white
stripes...perfect for a summer picnic or boat ride...and I love the way it looks
on me.
In this newsletter, I often talk about getting rid of clothes that are never
worn, or rarely worn because you don't really care for them. That being said,
building an organized wardrobe is very important to effective organization.
After all, tossing everything out that you don't wear or don't love may leave
you with next to nothing in your closet or drawers.
Take the time to go through your current wardrobe. Section off the clothes that
you absolutely love and count what you have. Do you have enough outfits that a)
you enjoy wearing, b) are appropriate for the season, and c) will allow you to
rotate your look for at least a few weeks?
If not, it may be time for you to do a little bit of shopping. BUT, don't go
shopping without planning...because that is the very action that often ends up
in clothing clutter.
To think it through...focus on one category of clothes at a time. Of those you
actually like wearing, make a list of what you have. For instance:
Jeans
1 pair of light blue mom jeans (casual)
1 pair of dark blue flair bottom jeans (casual to dressy)
1 pair of black jeans (casual to dressy)
1 pair of white jeans (dressy only)
Then, think about your needs. For instance, the white jeans are probably not
worn very often unless you have a special occasion, since they're marked as
'dressy only.' Depending on how often you need dressy jeans, you may have
enough. Plus, summer is coming, so will you even be wearing jeans that much this
season? Maybe you love your light blue mom jeans because they're comfy, but
don't wear them to work because they're too casual.
You get the idea. It's a bit of a thought process sometimes. But thinking
through this is important because a) you'll be better apt to make a good
decision about whether you need more jeans or not, and b) you'll have a good
idea of what kind of jeans (dressy, casual, color, style, etc.), purchased on
your next shopping trip, will give you another option in your wardrobe...rather
than just duplicate something you already have.
When you're satisfied with the jeans you own, move onto shirts that go with your
jeans...and then move on to skirts, etc.
The goals down the line should be:
1) when you open your closet or your drawers, the only clothes you should have
to choose from are those that you enjoy wearing, that 'go' with other things in
your wardrobe, that fit you well, and that make you feel good about yourself.
2) you have enough in your wardrobe that give you at least two week's worth of
good choices and give you the variety you desire.

All people have clutter to some degree. You may have a little. You may have a
ton. MOST people are somewhere right in the middle.
For anyone who has clutter, have no doubt in your mind that CLUTTER GROWS. Small
clutter challenges soon turn into large clutter issues.
Plus, clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may
have in your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in
the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.
Clutter can actually invade your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter
Once clutter is here, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...
There is only one way to get rid of clutter...and that is by using a proven-
effective clutter-removing system. Only then will you be able to face clutter
head-on and have the clutter-free life you deserve.
