  Today's Feature

Shoe, Sneaker, Sandal
(and Other Footwear) Clutter

Think about your shoes for a minute or two. When you have to leave your home, a) is it very easy to find and grab a pair, b) is that pair appropriate for the weather and wherever you are headed, and c) is the choice you typically make a comfortable one?

I was helping out a client recently. She had about 50 pairs of assorted shoes, sandals, boots, flip flops, etc. and they were all on the floor of her closet in a huge pile. It took us about an hour to sort and find each shoe's mate. In fact, she showed me four shoe boxes in her bedroom...a brand new pair of footwear in each...still unworn. And after seeing what she had in the pile once it was sorted, those new shoes seemed to be unnecessary purchases...almost duplicates of other shoes she already had.

After all her shoes were paired up, we sorted by category and style: dressy heels, casual heels, casual flats, dressy sneakers, casual sneakers, sandals, boots, flip flops and so on.

Then we weeded out those categories that were in excess. In her case, she had 8 pairs of black heels that were nearly identical to each other. She also had 6 pairs of white sneakers. By the time we were done, we whittled her 'collection' down to 15 pairs of footwear...all were those that she loved, were comfortable, and were not a duplicate of another pair she already had. She put all the extras in a donation bag, and put that bag in her vehicle for Goodwill.

At that point, I went online with her and we ordered a shoe rack for her closet...a much better idea than the chaotic pile she previously had. In a few days, that will arrive and she'll have an organized system and no shoe clutter.

This week is as good a time as any to take a good look at the footwear you own. Are you happy with the volume you have? Do you have duplicates (or uncomfortable shoes) that you can donate? Are your shoes organized and easy to locate and choose when you need them? Make some decisions based on those answers.

By the way, if you have shoes, boots, etc. that you love, but don't wear because they are in need of repair, bring them to your local cobbler and get them fixed. If your shoes are in very good condition, except the heel is wearing down for instance, it's often way more affordable to have them fixed, versus buying a brand new pair of shoes.
