Ask Maria:
76 Year Old Professional Procrastinator
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Dear Maria,
I am a 76-year old 'PROFESSIONAL PROCRASTINATOR' and I don't know where to
start! 70% of the stuff in my house shouldn't be here. HELP!!!! Is there hope
for me???
Love to hear from you.
Giacomo
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Giacomo,
Yes, there is hope!
It's very easy to procrastinate. No matter what it is, there is almost ALWAYS
something better to do. For instance, I can think up about a million more fun
activities than working on the weeds I saw popping up in my backyard garden beds
this morning. That being said, if I allow them to continue much longer, it's
going to be a bear to rectify the issue.
It sounds like your project is getting rid of clutter. That is actually a
problem, like garden weeds, that gets worse the more you delay.
There is only one way to make that procrastination begin going
away, and that is to begin taking tiny steps away from that tendency. This is
best done by giving yourself 'very small tasks' (that you can get done in 15-
minute chunks) in relation to the bigger project at hand, and consistently
working on those small tasks every single day.
Some other tips:
1. Commit to a specific time each day to do your small decluttering
task...and don't allow anything to get in the way of you doing it.
2. Do something enjoyable afterwards...to give you incentive for getting
it done. And don't reap that reward until the task is done.
3. Where do you start? Honestly, it doesn't matter. The only important
thing is that you start somewhere. My choice is always the one area that is
bothering me the very most...or the one that any visitors are the most likely
to see.
After you have a bag or box filled, donate or discard. Whatever you do, don't
allow it to sit in your home. Don't worry about 'organizing' anything right
now. Just focus on filling boxes or bags, and getting them out of your home.
Hope this helps! In fact, one other thing. It helps to be accountable to
someone. So, I'd love for you to report back to me next week and tell me you've
had 3 to 5 successful 15-minute decluttering days and, therefore, a wonderful
start. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. You can do it!
