Ask Maria: How Do I Organize Books for My Grandchildren?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Dear Maria,
Recently I have been trying to think of a way to better organize the books that
I have available for my grandchildren to enjoy when they are visiting. At
present, I have them sorted by what is age appropriate on a shelving unit. Some
of the books are sets and they are naturally stored together and then I have
books for the baby in one place and books for the older kids on other shelves.
Some of the books are rather thin, like the Golden Books and I think it is
difficult for the children to see them without pulling out several books at a
time. Then the little ones cannot place the books back on the shelf the way
that I have them.
I would appreciate any suggestions you have on organizing books and on the thin
children's puzzles...since we have those too.
Thanks for all your help.

Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Ronda,
It's so nice that you have a collection of books for your grandchildren when
they visit...and it's wonderful that you have them sorted out.
When my daughter was little, rather than just placing the books onto shelves, I
organized them into baskets first...and then put the baskets of books on the
shelves. I had an inventory of what books were in each basket...you can identify
baskets with colors, themes, reading ages, etc. and then make a list of books in
each basket for reference.
When my daughter wanted to read, I'd choose a basket for her (or she did it
herself as she got older) and she would 'finger through' the books, just like
looking for a file folder in a filing cabinet. When she was really little,
I helped her put the books back in the basket, and then put the basket on
the shelf. As she got older, she did both herself.
Of course, be careful if you place books high up on the shelves. As you know,
some kids might try to climb to get to them and may get hurt. If you can place
the baskets on the lower shelves of a bookcase where kids can reach them
themselves, or even on the floor, this would be safer...and the kids would then
have the independence to grab the basket they want.
Luckily, my daughter was pretty good about not pulling every book out of every
basket. But for kids who like having lots of books out at once, some parents
successfully institute a 'one basket at a time' policy so they don't pull out
tons of books that have to be put away later.
Also, here's something fun one of my friend's used to do. She purchased a
floating wall shelf
and installed it low enough for the kids to reach. Before her grandkids would
visit, my friend would borrow books from the library for those visit days, and
then display them (book cover facing forward) on the floating shelf. In doing
so, there were always some 'new' books for the kids to read.
Hope this helps a bit. Oh, and those puzzles can be sorted into baskets as well!

Tell me if this at all sounds familiar...
Karen is in her 50s and works a desk job. Her weight's okay, she's reasonably
active, but she is 'feeling her age.' Her neck and shoulders are often tight,
her joints ache, and overall stiffness sometimes causes her to wince just
getting out of her chair. The days that are really frustrating are when she
cannot even reach her shoes to tie her laces.
You see, no matter what Karen tries, she's stiff and can't stretch. A muscle or
age problem? Not necessarily. Very often, it's because the brain has forgotten
how to 'feel' parts of the body...back, hips, shoulders, etc. The brain just
becomes no longer aware of those parts. It cannot successfully direct the
muscles to move in certain ways.
Science now shows that by re-activating the brain, we can continue to positively
evolve and transform physically, mentally, and emotionally to experience an
increase in overall performance, flexibility, energy, and enthusiasm.
That's where the Neuromovement Healing Fest comes in. Discover the simple
movements that will immediately improve your brain functioning so you can move
freely once again without pain...just like in your younger days. You will see
super-fast results. Best yet, this event is free of charge. Visit:
