Adding Visible Rewards and Eye-Candy
|
In the past few days, my husband and I have been doing a lot of yard work. Some
years, it's not so bad. This year...well, let's just say there are many
challenges to deal with. Some of our trees didn't make it through this past
winter well...so we're having an arborist stop by next week to see if they can
be saved. We lost a few fairly big bushes that we're in the process of cutting
down. And the lawn looks 'OK, but not great.' I mentioned last week that we had
it aerated and my husband is in the process of seeding and fertilizing it. Plus,
we need to mulch the garden beds.
All of this adds up to money, work, and time. The indoor tasks, of course, need
to be done too. So, this is additional work for us this year.
It would be very easy to be frustrated right now, but that won't help matters
and it would honestly just make this 'fixing' process more of a struggle. So,
we're taking all of this in stride, handling each issue a little bit at a time,
rewarding ourselves for each job completed, and not fretting about 'what still
needs to be done.' It will get done as it gets done. Simple as that.
Anyway, I was thinking that these types of challenges call for 'visible
rewards.' When something isn't so 'eye-pleasing,' it's nice to add 'eye-candy'
that we can focus on.
So after digging out back (I was adding some perennials), I stopped at the
supermarket and bought some gorgeous, fresh-cut flowers and placed them in a
vase on our kitchen table. They smell amazing...and they make the whole room
appear 'sunnier' and more vibrant. In fact, a recent Harvard study confirmed
that 'people who had fresh-cut flowers at home not only felt less negative,
worried, and anxious overall, but also reported feeling happier and had more
energy and enthusiasm.' Having them definitely adds more joy and reminds us
to focus on the positive.
My daughter and I then stopped out at our local garden center. We have an
amazing one nearby (Ebert's...if you're ever in Wisconsin, you have to visit!)
and I could spend all day there. In fact, we did enjoy a longer-than-usual stay
admiring the surroundings. While there, we purchased a bunch of herbs and
container-vegetables for the planters on our deck. When we arrived home, my
daughter replanted them all into pretty pots (that we had stowed in our garage
from last year) and they have transformed our deck into an amazing 'edible
garden.' When it was time for dinner, we ate it outside on our deck, so we could
enjoy these new purchases...and we are looking forward to harvesting in the
summer days ahead.
Finally, it's amazing how little changes inside could make a room that much more
appealing. I focused on a 'corner' (yes, just one corner) of my kitchen. I
removed everything from the counter in that corner and added a narrow wooden
cutting board. On top of that, I placed a lovely bottle of lemon olive oil I
found in a specialty store (the bottle is so pretty), a small bowl of lemons,
and a lemon recipes cookbook perched on a
stand. It seems like such a small change but it adds visual interest to that
area...and my family enjoys the new look.
In summary, adding some eye-candy (when something else isn't looking so great)
can make a big difference in our energy and attitude levels.
