  Today's Feature

Ask Maria:
How Should I Prepare a First Aid Kit?

A GON Reader Asked:

Hi Maria!

I absolutely love your newsletter and website. The variety of advice you provide is outstanding!

My question to you today is, with summer close upon us, could you kindly share some ideas and tips about summer safety and especially preparing a First Aid kit please?

Thank you!

A lifelong reader, today and always!

Sue Geo

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Sue,

Thank you so very much for your lovely note! Regarding your question, YES, absolutely. Let's begin with a First Aid Kit. Everyone should have one at home AND in each vehicle. If you don't want to make your own, there are inexpensive First Aid Kits you can purchase online that include the essentials.

Otherwise, put one together yourself. An inexpensive (large) makeup bag, fanny pack or fishing tackle box is perfect for this purpose. Use one that's water- resistant. Group like-items with re-sealable sandwich bags. Some folks have very elaborate kits. Mine is more basic. Here's what it includes:

Ace Bandage (Velcro Closure)

Aloe

Antibiotic Ointment

Antiseptic pads/Alcohol Wipes

Band-Aids (Assorted Sizes)

Bottles of drinking water (We don't keep these in the kit, but rather readily available at home and in each vehicle.)

Calamine Lotion

Cotton Balls

Cold Packs (No pre-chilling required)

CPR mask with one-way valve

First Aid Manual (Although I also have a first aid app on my phone)

Flashlight and Extra Batteries

Hand Sanitizer

Hydrocortisone Cream (1%)

Insect Repellent

Medical Tape

Q-tips

Paper and pencil

Scissors

Splinting Material

Sterile Gauze Roll and Pads

Sterile Gloves (Vinyl or Plastic)

Sunburn Relief Lotion

Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)

Thermometer

Tweezers

OTC Meds: Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, Tums (check often to ensure they're not expired

Regarding your second question about summer safety tips, you gave me a great idea. I'm going to focus on summer safety tips for the entire week ahead, a tip or two a day. So stay tuned!
