  Today's Feature

Sometimes Being Organized Requires an Initial Time Investment

My daughter, Amanda, is a junior in high school and is in the process of visiting colleges.

We already went on a bunch of in-state tours in Wisconsin, as well as tours in one neighboring state. Now we're planning for a major road trip from Wisconsin to Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. That's happening in July and there is quite a bit of planning.

Initially, we were thinking of flying and renting a car...but we decided to scrap that plan. Driving will be great mother-daughter bonding time for us, and will involve less hassles and expense with airlines and rental car companies.

We're looking forward to it. As you can imagine, there is quite a bit of planning involved. First, my daughter had to determine the colleges that would best set her up for success and align with her personality. She has been working on this for months, and has her 'to visit' list in a spreadsheet...with columns for all the criteria so we can take notes as we visit each college. I'm proud of her and relieved. By doing this, she has taken excellent prep steps to be sure this is an organized process.

Next she had to set up tour appointments with the colleges we'll be visiting. This was tricky because I didn't want to have to drive, for example, from Connecticut to New York and then back to Connecticut again. The appointments had to be made according to location (without backtracking)...and distance between colleges...for the week we'd be in town. It was a lot of work and a ton of scheduling and rescheduling to get it right...but we now have a plan.

Then, we had to make hotel reservations in multiple cities/states. We tried to stick with one hotel chain for the entire trip whenever possible, but had to stray from this plan a few times if that chain wasn't close enough. All of those reservations are now made.

Finally, no trip to the east coast is complete for our family without an extended family visit. So, we're planning some beach time at the end of our trip to hang out with my dad and my sister's family. By that time, I'm sure we'll be more than ready to enjoy some relaxing time before we head back for the long drive home.

In summary, sometimes being organized takes an initial time investment. But just imagine what a nightmare, and time waster, this trip would be without effective preparation. Planning and preparation, no matter what project you're working on:

a) provides direction and makes the objectives crystal clear.

b) reduces risk of problems.

c) decreases overlap and wasteful activity.

d) significantly decreases chaos and stress.

e) dramatically increases the chances that goals will be met.
