Summer Safety Week:
Enjoying Outdoor Activities...Safely
|
Safety is a vital component in getting and staying organized in all areas of
your life. In preparation of summer, for the entire week ahead I'm focusing on
summer safety tips. Feel free to reply with your own...and I'll include those in
future editions of this newsletter.
Summer is the perfect time of the year for outdoor activities...bike riding,
boating, swimming, amusement parks, going to a ball game, and more. I love
summer and I enjoy many outdoor activities. That being said, just like
everything else we do, taking precautions to do these safely will help provide a
fun event, and not an emergency room visit or worse. Here are a few simple tips
related to enjoying outdoor activities safely.
1) Bike riding: Wear a helmet. Ride a bike that's in good condition. Obey
street signs. Use hand signals. Ride in your designated lane if there is one for
bikes. Ride with the traffic flow, not against it. Don't listen to music on your
headset or airpods while you're riding a bike...you have to be able to hear
what's happening around you.
2) Swimming: Swim at beaches and public pools only when a lifeguard is
present. Never swim alone. Always have a buddy there for emergencies. If you
don't know how to swim, take swim lessons...and get them for your kids. Never
leave children or pets unattended at the pool, lake, beach, etc.
3) Amusement parks: Take breaks between rides and choose those that are
age and health appropriate. Always follow stated rules. Avoid caffeine, sugary
foods, and fatty foods...which I know is pretty hard at amusement parks. But if
you do eat these, wait a while before getting on a ride...especially a ride that
is fast or that spins. Getting nauseous is no fun. Be sure you strap, belt, bar,
or latch carefully, and allow the ride attendant to double-check.
4) Going to a ball game: Remember to bring sunscreen with a protection
factor of 30 or higher. Bring sunglasses and a brimmed hat. Think about the time
of day you'll be attending and try to buy tickets in a stadium section where the
sun won't be beating down on you. The last time my family went to a ball game (a
few years ago), we choose an area under an overhang to ensure we'd be in the
shade. Take precautions when tailgating...keeping food safe, practicing safe
grilling, not drinking too much alcohol, etc.
