  Organizing Thought of the Day

Bare Naked Organizing

Put on some energizing music, pull down the shades, and lock the door... today you're going to be doing some bare naked organizing! Here's how.

1. Set the tone with music. Bare naked organizing requires energy and atmosphere. Your favorite music will provide both of these necessities. Turn up the volume.

2. Strip...until bare naked. That's right, strip! Not you, silly. Strip the room or area (a shelf, a drawer, etc.) that you're trying to organize. The idea is to start off with an empty slate. It's much easier to organize an area, when you're not looking at a pile of clutter. So, empty out your closet. Take all the papers off your desk. Remove all items from the countertop. Whatever you're trying to organize, strip it down until there's nothing left but the bare surface.

3. Enjoy the moment and plan your next act. Now that the room or area is completely 'naked,' take a moment to enjoy the simplicity of it all. When was the last time you saw empty shelves in the closet? Maybe you haven't seen your desktop in months. Perhaps you haven't seen the floor of your clothes closet since you originally moved into your home. It's important to maintain that feeling of simplicity.

4. Clean. It's very easy to clean a 'bare naked' room or area. Since you've removed everything, vacuuming, dusting, wiping, etc. can be done quickly.

5. Get dressed. That is...begin 'dressing' the area you're organizing with the items that belong there. Add the clothing you love back to your clothes closet. Return your favorite dinnerware set back to your kitchen cabinets. While doing this, keep effective organizing in mind. Store similar categories of items together. Contain small possessions in baskets and containers. And whatever you're not keeping, of course, should be donated, sold, or trashed.

Great job! You're done...until your next bare naked organizing session!
