Ask Maria: Question About the Office My Husband and I Share

A GON Reader Asked:

I could use some help. My husband works from home occasionally and we share an office. This generally isn't an issue, except that my desk is his Zoom background and it is most definitely NOT the image he should be projecting to the world!

My desk tends to be where I drop things that are in progress, and my bulletin board (a magnetic whiteboard) is where I put photos, mementos, receipts, etc. It's NOT pretty! I could use some inspiration. Thank you!

--Karen, Bay Village, OH

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Karen,

There are a few possibilities that would not require you to re-organize and re-think your entire work area every time your husband uses Zoom in your office.

The first would be a room divider that you can quickly set up when needed. Just slip it behind your chair when your hubby is using Zoom and everything will be instantly hidden.

The second would be a room divider curtain, hung from a tension rod.

The third would be a green screen. With it, you'd be able to use Zoom's background feature that allows you to add a backdrop of the New York skyline, the beach, a garden, or whatever you like. You don't necessarily need a green screen with Zoom, BUT you would need a plain background, good lighting, etc. Before you do any of this, be sure your computer meets all the necessary technical requirements.

I'm not sure what your room set up is, but a fourth option might be repositioning the computer's camera so it's showing a less busy area on screen. Your husband might also opt to go on Zoom from an iPad in a different room.

Other than that, and especially if it's a pretty rare occasion that your husband would have to use the desk AND use Zoom simultaneously, try to do what you can to make it quick and easy for you to 'clean up a bit' so to speak. For instance, is it possible to clear off (or pretty up) just one part of the whiteboard and position the camera so only that area is showing on Zoom? Could you add some wooden document trays to your desk that 'close up' when not in use? Maybe you might consider relocating some of your mementos...perhaps to a shelf that would not be in the camera's view.

Hope this gives you and your husband some ideas to consider.
