Summer Safety Week:
Summer Storms: Be Prepared
|
Safety is a vital component in getting and staying organized in all areas of
your life. In preparation of summer, for the entire week ahead I'm focusing on
summer safety tips. Feel free to reply with your own...and I'll include those in
future editions of this newsletter.
Be prepared for summer storms. Summer is known for beautiful sunny days,
being outside in the backyard or on the beach, enjoying an outdoor shopping
outing, or boating on the lake. This time of year, however, sometimes brings the
threat of potentially dangerous storms. Be organized and prepared, and take
safety precautions.
1. Lightning: Reschedule outdoor activities when thunderstorms are in the
forecast. Heed the phrase, 'When thunder roars, go indoors.' Avoid open fields
or the top of a hill. Don't stay in open vehicles (motorcycles, convertibles,
golf carts, etc.) Never take shelter under a tree, tower, or utility pole.
Lightning seeks out tall objects! Steer clear of bodies of water, including
indoor swimming pools. Stay away from wet items, metal fences, and wires. When
indoors, don't shower, take a bath, wash hands, or do anything that requires
water from your plumbing system.
2. Tornados: While there is sometimes advance notice with tornados, they
can also arrive fast and furious without much warning. Take tornado sirens
seriously and get yourself and your family (pets included) to safety. Know (and
go to) the safest area of your home during a severe storm (basement, underground
cellar, or an inner part of your home away from windows). Caught outdoors
driving during a tornado? If it's safe, drive to the nearest shelter. If not,
like if you're encountering severe flying debris, pull over and park. Keep your
seat belts on, your heads below the windows, and cover yourselves with a
blanket. (By the way, always keep a blanket in your vehicle, especially in
storm-prone areas.)
3. Hurricanes: There is usually plenty of advance warning with
hurricanes. If you know one is coming, take all necessary precautions. Know
evacuation routes, and evacuate when you're cautioned/ordered to do so. Before
leaving, if there is still ample time, unplug all appliances and turn off all
electricity. Elevate furniture if possible to avoid possible flood damage.
According to Feed the Children, 'Set up a disaster kit. A disaster kit may be
different for each family. However, each kit should have basic items such as
bottled water, non-perishable snacks, flashlights, batteries, sanitation items,
important documents, and first aid kits. For children, they may want to have
extra school supplies to keep them busy, comfort items such as blankets and
stuffed animals, and their favorite book.'
4. Storm Power Outages: Designate a drawer or a box for emergency items
needed during a power-outage. It should be extremely easy to access, even in the dark
if the power goes out. Include fresh batteries, a battery-powered radio, and a
few flashlights. Make sure everyone in the family knows where it is located.
Finally, be sure computers, laptops, and other devices are plugged into a
quality surge protector to help prevent
damage.
