Fabulous Organizing Tips and Thoughts
from GON Readers
Here are a bunch of tips and thoughts from GON Readers to brighten your day...
Thanks for the reminder!
Hello Maria,
Thank you for the reminder about hydration in a recent newsletter! I find, as I
am getting older, I don't have much of a thirst anymore, so the more reminders
for me the better. Take care.

Extra water bottles in the car
Hi Maria,
I had once heard that it's not a good idea to keep plastic water bottles stored
in a hot car. I was told the heat breaks down the plastic and compounds get into
the water that we will drink. It's supposed to be all right for a one day trip,
but not to store it in the trunk for months. This is what I heard, so I am not
positive if it's true or not.
-- Ann
Response from Maria Gracia:
Ann,
Thank you for asking. In a previous newsletter, I suggested keeping water
bottles in the car in case your reusable one runs out and you need to refill.
This way, if you really need a water (especially on a long road trip), you have
one readily available. In fact, if you're going on a road trip, keeping extra
water bottles in a cooler (that has ice) is a good idea. Plus, it's more
pleasant, for many people, to drink cool water versus warm.
That being said, I looked up your question about keeping plastic bottles
stored in a hot car.
According to Dr. Lance Williams, Professor of Biology at the University of Texas
at Tyler, 'If you left it in a car for weeks at a time, then there's a small
chance that some chemicals like BEP could leach into the water, but it's a very
small probability,' Williams said. 'The larger risk comes when people drink from
a bottle, leave it in a hot car and then drink it again, Williams said. That
bacteria has a chance to grow, and then you may have a serious health issue on
your hands.'
So, leaving a few water bottles in the car, as long as they're sealed, for days
or a few weeks (not months) is OK.
Hope this helps!

Extra First Aid Kit items
Regarding my May 28th Newsletter
in which I mentioned items to include in a first aid kit, these readers had
a few additions:
Hi Maria,
Regarding the First Aid Kit, I'd like to add this: Female hygiene items (pads
and/or tampons). If needed when out of town, sometimes it's challenging to locate
a store and not having these available may cause unnecessary panic.
--Akemi
Hi Maria,
Another good item to include is burn gel.
--Anonymous
Maria,
One item I always keep in my first aid kit is an extra inexpensive pair of
reading glasses. One time I was on a road trip, and lost the pair that was in my
purse. I probably left them in a restaurant or something. A day later, still on
the road, I pulled over to read directions on a map...and discovered I had no
reading glasses to do so and my eyesight wasn't good enough to put the map to
good use. Ever since then, I keep an extra pair in my car in my first aid kit.
