  Organizing Thought of the Day

Wondering about something? Ask Me!

A GON Reader Asked:

Is your closet (and are your drawers) ALWAYS organized? Just wondering.

--Lisa T, Quebec, Canada

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for asking. I am very mindful about keeping my clothes closet and drawers organized on an ongoing basis. After clothing is laundered, I hang items in my closet, being sure to keep all long-sleeves together, all short-sleeves together, etc. I also place clean socks in my sock organizer, sweaters neatly stacked, etc.

I will say though that, every now and then, I thoroughly go through a section of my closet (or a drawer or two) to evaluate if I'm still loving and using that clothing. I will weed out and donate as needed.

And, no matter what, every now and then, closets and drawers need to be thoroughly cleaned out. I handle this task by cleaning one closet area or drawer at a time, ensuring they aren't getting dusty. By the way, hangers that are holding clothes get dusty.

Now and then, I remove shoe racks from the floor of the closet to vacuum the carpeting...and I also dust off the shoe rack before returning it (and the shoes on it) to the closet.

A GON Reader Asked:

You mentioned that your daughter loves stuffed animals. Mine does too. She has a rather large collection. Do you have any ideas for storing/displaying them? I try to limit what she keeps in her room and the rest go in the play area in our basement. She is not good about parting with any. I've tried, but they mean a lot to her.

I enjoy your daily email. Just reading it every day keeps me more mindful about organizing.

--Kathy Menomonie, WI

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Kathy,

My daughter has always loved stuffed animals and, to her, they are 'alive' so she has zero interest in parting with any of them...and she is 17 years old. I'm thinking there is a 99% chance that she will actually take them all with her to college. Here are three ideas that we have used through the years that may help with your daughter's collection:

1) Put them in the zoo. When my daughter was really young, we used the The Zoo. This structure attached to the wall in her bedroom and made it super-easy to access and store stuffed animals. Some of my friends have also had success with a toy hammock.

2) One in, one out. As my daughter grew, so did her stuffed animal collection. So, we instituted a 'one in, one out' system. Although it pained her to give up a stuffed friend, she was only allowed to get herself another one AFTER she donated one. This helped to keep the volume from continuing to grow.

3) Baskets with lids. These days, my daughter keeps 10 stuffed friends in her room, and the rest in rattan baskets with lids. These are stored on a shelf in our finished basement. She rotates those she keeps on display and those she keeps stored...every month or so.

Learn What Your Cat is Trying To Tell You With...

The Cat Language Bible

Yes, meow means something

What does it mean, you ask?

Good question. It's about the same as aloha in Hawaiian.

The meaning changes.

Context matters hugely. Is it a mean meow, or a friendly one?

What about the cat's body action? Is he facing towards you, or away? Is the tail curled, or lying flat against the floor?

Depending on these points, 'meow' could mean 'let's watch a movie together' or 'boy am I thirsty right now.'

So getting the tone and body language right is critical.

Finally, there's a quick guide on the essentials of cat communication to open your ears (and your heart) into the fascinating world of feline communication, both verbal and nonverbal.

This guide, written by a PhD animal communications expert Dr Jonas Jurgella, is the missing link that allows you to bond with your own feline friend as if he was a human child.

That's the power of true and honest communication, vs the primitive 'animal baby talk' that so many pet owners unfortunately relegate themselves to.
