Organizing Thought of the Day

Part 1: Organizing Money and Finances
|
Stacks of unpaid bills. Money in three different banks. A wallet stuffed with
plastic. A worried wait as the cashier rings up your groceries and you're trying
to remember if you made the transfer from your main account to your debit
account...
Keeping your money and finances organized is important...and it's not as
difficult as some may think. Here are five easy ways to begin...and tomorrow
will include the next five:
1. Keep paper currency organized in your wallet, large bills first, small
bills second...$100, $50, $20, $10, $5, $1
2. Keep coins in a change purse. But, coins can get very heavy, so limit
how much you're lugging around with you. I generally have $3.00 worth of coins
with me when I'm out and about, and the rest go into a piggy bank at home.
3. Consolidate your credit cards down to two. The more plastic you have,
the more work you're giving yourself...and the bigger the chances of you
spending unnecessarily.
4. Organize your expenses, as you spend. As you spend, just record that
expense in a spreadsheet, in a program like Quicken, or on paper. Look at those
expenses each week to determine how you can cut back.
5. Call those who send you bills to determine if they'll lower it. I was
able to get our phone bill and home security alarm bill lowered, simply by
asking about my options.
To be continued tomorrow...
