Organizing Thought of the Day

I Can't Get Organized Because I Live in a Big/Small Home
|
'I can't get organized because I live in a big house.'
'I can't get organized because I live in a small apartment.'
Believe it or not, I hear these two statements all the time.
There are plusses and minuses, no matter how much (or little) square footage you
have.
If you live in a very large home, you have plenty of space and lots of options
for storage. However, since you have so much space, you also have lots of
opportunity for clutter to build up. And if you allow it to build up, the volume
of clutter can become colossal.
If you live in a small apartment, you have a lot less to clean. There is also
less space to fill with clutter, so even if it begins to get bad, there's really
only so much you can physically fit. However, you don't have much storage space,
which means it can be challenging when it comes to what you can keep (even those
items you do use and love) and where you're going to display/store it all.
The good news is, you can get organized equally well as someone living in a
larger or a smaller home! The principles are basically the same.
1) Eliminate the stuff you don't need. This is important whether you live in a
mansion or in a tiny home. Clutter is anything you don't use and/or that you
don't love. Fill a donation box/bag today with anything that fits this
description, and drop it off at your local charity, add it to your rummage sale
stash, (or trash it if it's unusable.) Do this every week until there is nothing
left that fits this description. Your end goal is to only own things that you
use and/or love.
2) Display/store the possessions you use and love in an effective manner. Be
sure the item is in the room/area that's most logical. Keep like-items with
like-items. Make use of wall space...shelves and hooks. Realize that if it's 'in
a box' and not being used, it may be a candidate for the donation center or the
trash. The one exception is if it's a 'memories item.' But even if it is, isn't
it better to have it stored where it can be easily accessed and enjoyed...rather
than tucked away, never to see the light of day?
