  Organizing Thought of the Day

The Importance of Structure

While watching a news talk show last night, I was reminded of the importance of structure.

Basically, the show follows the same exact format with each new episode. It begins with a run down of quick headlines to entice the viewer, follows with the anchor's monologue, continues with the top news story, moves on to guest interviews, follows with other news stories, and concludes with an introduction to the next news show in the line-up...with a commercial break in between each section.

Does the TV program deviate from this format? Occasionally. But for the most part, it is true to this structured format.

If you think about it, you may begin to recognize that there are so many areas in life that are running in a structured and efficient manner--most paychecks come in every week or two, your credit card bills are processed and sent the same time each month, your favorite radio show follows the same basic format each morning, the seasons are always in the order of spring, summer, fall and then winter...

Structure, in everyday life, is sometimes seen as something very good...a way to get things done without having to constantly be making decisions. Other times, folks are turned off by it...feeling that it's too restrictive.

Some feel that if their lives are structured, they would lose their sense of spontaneity. Some think their lives are too varied and busy to be on a structured schedule. Others simply haven't thought about giving themselves a more structured schedule.

Here's what I do. I have a very structured schedule...but I allow 'open time blocks' for spontaneity.

For instance, on weekdays, after I get ready and have my breakfast, 6 days a week I drive to the gym and work out for an hour. When I return home, I shower. Then, I toss laundry in the wash. After the load is started, I work on my business for the next two hours. I then always have a 30-minute break scheduled. Then, back to work for a few hours. Then a one-hour lunch break. Then, back to work for a few hours...followed by another 30-minute break. And so on and so forth...until I lay my head down to bed at 11-ish each evening.

You'll notice that I have a few 30-minute breaks, plus a one-hour lunch break, pre-scheduled. This is my spontaneous time. Some days I may go out on my deck for a cup of coffee. Some days I'll go out with a friend. Yet, other days, I may stop in a local store to browse around...or hang out on social media for a bit.

This certainly doesn't mean I don't take a full day off (or a full week off) now and then. Because I do...and I thoroughly enjoy that time off. But, on most days, it's easy to get things done...and have fun...on a structured schedule.

Personally, I love living a structured life, because it means I can keep up with my day to day home and work tasks AND have a balanced, full life as well.
