Do you know of solar lights that last?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Do you know of any solar lights (outdoor) that actually last, or should we plan
to replace every year?
--Ann H.
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Ann,
So many families, these days, use
solar lights to illuminate pathways and
gardens...my family included. They don't last forever, but you can typically
get at least two years out of them (ours are going on four!) before you need to
change the rechargeable battery or replace the light itself. There are, however,
a few things you can do to make them last a bit longer.
1) If you live in a state where ice and snow are typical during some seasons of
the year (like where I live in Wisconsin), stow them away during those seasons.
Cold temperatures will affect the battery life, and once they're covered with
snow, they won't be able to maintain a charge.
2) Clean them...frequently. Wipe the panels of each with a clean cloth once
every few weeks. I know this is a bit of a pain, but don't skip this step.
3) If your lights have an OFF position, switch them to that setting when there
are long periods of rain or clouds in the forecast. This will help extend the
battery life.
4) Think about placement. If your lights aren't getting enough full sun, they're
not going to shine bright. This takes a bit of thought. Install them on a
bright, sunny day, in areas where the sun is strongest. Don't place them near
bushes or trees that will shade the sun from getting to the panels.
5) Keep extra batteries on hand. Once a battery is weak or drained, throw it out
and replace it...BEFORE your batteries get corroded.
Hope this helps!
