  Organizing Thought of the Day

In Celebration of July 4, 1776


I'm participating in my town's 4th of July parade today with a group of my Zumba friends. We've done this every year...except for last year when it was canceled due to the pandemic. That was a sad day for all of us...not only because we missed the festivities, but because of the global devastation that was happening all around us.

Thankfully, on this year's 4th of July, life in my town of approximately 25,000 people is pretty much back to the way it was pre-pandemic...and many areas elsewhere are also seeing a return to life as we knew it before the coronavirus crisis.

For today's parade performance, we planned for about a month. We had to sign up to be in the parade, promote the fact that we were doing it, choose the song, choreograph the dance, teach everyone the dance in multiple practices, make sure we have water for everyone (it's always so hot!), find someone to drive the truck that holds the speaker...honestly, the list goes on and on. There is a lot of planning that goes into doing something like this. That being said, getting everyone and everything organized has been a fun process and today is the big day! Everyone is excited.

Back on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence. Imagine all the detail and planning that went into that project...including the most important part--the wording that had to be agreed upon by all those who signed it! If you include the names of the 56 signers, the total word count in the Declaration of Independence is 1,458. The 35 words most familiar to people are these:

'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.'

While we're enjoying the parades, barbecues, and fireworks today, let us recall that there wouldn't be any 4th of July festivities if it wasn't for our founding fathers. I know, while I'm dancing and enjoying the rest of the day, my heart will be focused on exactly what we're celebrating AND how significant the wording in that document is to all of us in the U.S.A. and globally as well.
