  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
How Should I Store Wind Chimes

A GON Reader Asked:

How can I store wind chimes neatly so they don't get all tangled up? My wife loves them and we only have so much room in the house to hang them, so I put some in storage for the next season. I have been following you at least since 2007, when I started saving some of your tips to a Word file! Keep up the great work.

--Robert M. (Grandfather in my 70s still working)

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Robert,

Thanks SO MUCH for being such a loyal reader for 14 years...wow! That means so much to me!

I love wind chimes as well. Because they come in all sizes and materials, it is hard to give a one-size-fits-all solution, but here are a couple of ideas I thought up.

Box Storage

1. Tissue paper. Wrap each string in a separate piece of tissue paper, taping it tightly, especially at the top and bottom, so the strands don't get loose. Thin bubble wrap would work well too.

2. Plastic drinking straws. This would work for a simple wind chime, but not those with strands of shells or beads. Slice one side of a plastic drinking straw and cover each strand, taping the straw closed in one or two places. Perhaps some paper towel cores would work to put around each strand for wind chimes with larger pieces, like shells.

Lay each set gently in a shallow box, keeping them well separated. Be sure they are clean and dry before putting them away in the box.

Hanging Storage

Still another thought is to store them hanging somewhere out of the way. You could hang them on a rod in a closet (use a tension-type shower curtain rod and shower curtain hooks). I would not store them in a closet I use all the time. Otherwise, they're probably going to be in the way. Also, unless they are covered with something (like a dry-cleaning bag), they will get dusty and need cleaning before using them again.

I hope you and your wife thoroughly enjoy the melodies of your wind chimes this summer!

Have you ever found yourself alone, singing a song...maybe out of tune... only to realize a co-worker or family member listening and making fun of your ability? Or maybe it was an insensitive joke, like: 'Don't give up your day job.'

We shrug these things off and pretend they don't bother us, but it hurts and it ruins our joy of singing.

On the other hand, you may be very excited to know that, within a matter of weeks, you could...

Sing so incredibly well and with such power and expression, that when people listened to your voice, they felt goosebumps and welled up with emotional tears?

This leads me to something really good that I know you're going to love. If you've ever wanted to learn how to sing (or to sing better), this singing course is head and shoulders above the rest...it's called Singorama.

Learn how to:

* Sing with effortless strength
* Increase your vocal range by at least an octave
* Sing with beautiful tone and perfect pitch

  Inspiration

'A breeze lifted off the ocean and several hundred notes from the wind chimes tinkled like ice shaken in silver cups. They altered the mood of the forest the way an orchestra does a theater when it begins tuning up its instruments.' (Pat Conroy)
