  Organizing Thought of the Day

Are You Overwhelmed? Count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1


Everybody gets overwhelmed now and then. Intense work projects, a family member who is injured or ill, a home project that doesn't typically take place (like a kitchen remodel), a move coming up...to another house (maybe to another state), or even having way too many tasks on a TO DO list can be enough to make a person feel like their time or patience has reached a breaking point.

When most folks get upset, it's very easy for that anxiety to escalate. Sometimes, it escalates to the point that it's near impossible to calmly or rationally deal with whatever it is. If you're at a point that you're feeling completely overwhelmed, try counting down 5-4-3-2-1. This exercise is meant to help you release those feelings of overwhelm and get back to a more grounded, relaxed, productive state of mind. Here's how it works.

FIVE: Name (and picture in your mind) 5 places you love (your backyard, the ocean, Disneyworld, the spa, etc.).

FOUR: Name (and picture in your mind) 4 blessings in your life.

THREE: Name 3 positive adjectives (like strong, calm, able, generous, relaxed, practical, kind, respectful, etc.)

TWO: Name 2 people (and picture in your mind) who you admire...one from the past, and one from the present.

ONE: Name 1 positive affirmation ('I can handle anything that comes to me.' 'I am good at what I do.' 'I am enough.' 'I can just tackle this a little at a time.'

The 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 method works wonders because it helps you slow down and puts your mind into a more positive, calm, solution-focused state.
