  Organizing Thought of the Day

Indulging in Beloved Pastimes and Self-Care

I was reading my horoscope the other day and it stated, 'Time spent on beloved pastimes and self-care benefits you, heart and soul.' All I can say to that is 'Amen!' No matter how busy I am or what challenge I'm facing, being able to turn to my favorite pastimes and indulging in even a tiny bit of self-care always helps keep me in a positive mindset. Here are a few personal examples.

Reading: I'm not talking about the reading I 'have' to do, like all of the financial-focused reading I'm doing for my daughter who will be attending college soon or the instruction manual for an appliance I purchased. I'm talking about 'relaxing, drinking iced-tea, sitting on a lounge chair, enjoying a beautiful day' type of reading. Do I ever feel guilty taking the time to do this? No way. There is a time for work and a time to relax and enjoy something. Period.

Scrapbooking: I've been scrapbooking for years and I truly love it. It allows me to release my creative juices...and results in organized photos and memories for years to come.

Going on adventures: While I love leaving home for a long vacation now and then, I'm also happy driving to another town to explore a new book store or go for a hike in a beautiful park. An adventure can even be experienced in the town I live in...like going to an outdoor concert or a local art show.

Focusing on nutrition and exercise: I'm a big believer in keeping myself as healthy as possible for myself and my family. Instead of seeing either as 'a chore,' I keep both fun. For nutrition, I combine my beliefs with my love of cooking. Making something new, that is also healthy, is a fun journey I embark on at least once a week. Last week, I cooked with a Chayote for the very first time...it was delicious in the turkey tacos I whipped up. I teach exercise classes: Zumba (dancing) and Pound Fitness (drumming)...which means I get to exercise daily for my own benefit AND help others stay fit at the same time. And they're both fun exercise formats!

Social time: It's excellent self-care for the mind and soul when I'm spending time with family and/or friends...and I do so often. While I enjoy being in a larger, lively group now and then, I enjoy one-on-one time most of all because I feel it provides a deeper, more personal, interaction.

Taking the time for personal care: Whether it's going for a pedicure, focusing on my daily skincare routine, buying a new shirt, choosing a new shade of lipstick, meditating, journaling, or getting my haircut, I treat this personal time as the sacred time it is...time meant just for me. After all, I'm at my best for others when I do so.

I would LOVE to hear about your pastimes and self-care. Reply when you have time and let me know. I'll publish comments in future editions of this newsletter.

1. Physical Clutter
