  Organizing Thought of the Day

Going Somewhere? Pack Practical

While I love, love, love traveling...I'm not a big fan of having to pack and unpack clothes. But I do have some processes I use to make packing a bit more tolerable...and not have super-heavy luggage to lug around.

1. Pack practical. Instead of focusing on 'packing light,' I focus on 'packing practical.' This means that I invest some time before my trips thinking about what I need, for where I'm going, for what I'm doing, and I pack accordingly. For instance, let's say I'm traveling to Florida for 4 days in July. I write down the days and what I'll likely be doing:

Thursday (Visit relatives and eat meals at that relative's house)

Friday (Go on a beach adventure during the day. Maybe do some late afternoon shopping. Go out to eat at a casual restaurant at night.)

Saturday (Go to an amusement park during the day and stay all the way through until the fireworks display later that night)

Sunday (Go golfing in the morning, sit by the pool in the afternoon, and then out to a nice restaurant in the evening.)

Once I have this information, I can now choose the outfits I'll likely need for each day, one by one.

For instance, on Thursday, I'd need one casual outfit and a pair of sandals. For Friday, I'd need my bathing suit, coverup, sandals, beach hat, and beach towel...and then a casual outfit to wear for shopping and dinner. For Saturday, I'd need a casual outfit and comfortable walking shoes...and maybe an outfit and sandals to change into for dinner. If I'm walking around in an amusement park all day, I always bring a change of clothes for later. For Sunday, I'd need my golf clothes/shoes, bathing suit, etc. for the pool, and a nicer outfit for the evening, along with a nice pair of shoes and maybe matching earrings. I'd need sleepwear, underwear, and socks for each day as well.

2. I always pack ONE extra casual outfit and one extra dress that I can wear to a casual restaurant or maybe even one that's a bit more dressy.

I also always include a casual sweatshirt and one nicer sweater, in case it's cold in an air conditioned restaurant...or if it suddenly gets a bit chilly outside.

In working this out ahead of time, I'm able to pack exactly what I need, with 'a few' extras just in case. I almost always use everything I pack when I travel, and I rarely have to run to the store at my destination to buy an extra sweatshirt, etc...which always tends to be expensive in touristy areas.

If I'm going on a longer trip...

3. I ask myself if I can wear certain outfits twice. I will often do this if we're not taking a whole lot of photos (because I don't like wearing the same outfit in two different places and having photos of me in that same outfit).

I also only tend to wear outfits twice on the same trip IF I plan to launder clothes during my trip...which, by the way, I always do as long as laundry facilities are easily available.

I have TONS of other packing and traveling tips if you're interested. Ask me your questions and I'll cover those topics in future newsletter issues.
