Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Day 2: Organize Your Way to Better Health
|
The topic of 'getting organized' relates to every single aspect of your
life...your home, family, schedule, finances, social life, education, career,
retirement, relationships...EVERYTHING. This week, I'm zoning in on organizing
your way to better health. Today is DAY 2 of a 5-day series.
3. Determine your 'active living' baseline. What do you do to stay
active...walking, running, dancing, hiking, golfing, etc.? When you do these
physical activities, are your workouts vigorous (meaning your heart is beating
pretty fast and you can hear yourself breathing), moderate (your heart is
beating faster than normal...but you can talk and even increase if you wanted
to), or light (your heart is beating just slightly harder than normal).
Is what you're currently doing what you'd like to be doing...or are you doing
too much or too little? It's good to assess what's happening right now, on a
normal day.
4. Then determine how you can meet your 'active living' goals...even if
you're busy. Most people will say that there is always room for being more
active in their lives as far as their goals...but their time won't allow for
more. That being said, there are so many benefits to being active on a daily
basis, like managing your weight, reducing your chances of cancer, heart attack,
diabetes, and other health challenges, lowering your risk of falls, etc.
If you're serious about being more active in your life, a great project would be
figuring out what you can eliminate or change in your schedule so you can fit
activity (something that gets you movin' and groovin') into every day. One
friend of mine goes for a walk with her spouse after dinner nearly every night.
My neighbor takes a class at the gym at 8:00 a.m., showers there, and goes to
work directly after...she never misses it and tells me the class has become
'part of her' (just like brushing her teeth.
One of my colleagues divides his workout into two 20-minute sessions...he goes
for a brisk walk with his dog every morning, and lifts weights or swims before
dinner. On the weekends, he and his family try to engage in 'active' family time,
like walking through a zoo, playing Frisbee in their yard, or walking on a
nature trail. This helps him stay in shape (as well as his family) and gives
everyone wonderful bonding time.
