  Organizing Thought of the Day

Day 3: Organize Your Way to Better Health

The topic of 'getting organized' relates to every single aspect of your life...your home, family, schedule, finances, social life, education, career, retirement, relationships...EVERYTHING. This week, I'm zoning in on organizing your way to better health. Today is DAY 3 of a 5-day series.

5. Give yourself rules for eating at home. I give myself some specific rules, so to speak, for when I eat at home...which is most of time. These rules are based on my personal goals for healthy living. For instance, I rarely eat while watching TV because by doing so, I tend to mindlessly eat...or should I say 'over-eat.' I treat eating as more of a 'social activity'...time when I eat and catch up with my family. A friend of mine, who lives alone, will often invite a friend over to share a meal with her. On other days, she does a 'video conference dinner' with a friend or family member who lives far away. She brings her meal to the table...and so does the other person...and they eat 'together' while chatting.

The food on my dinner plate must include lots of colors...so it always includes a variety of vegetables. Sometimes those veggies are cooked, and if I'm short on time on some evenings, I'll eat them raw...but they're always on my plate, before the protein, before the rice, etc.

Fruit is almost always my dessert when I'm eating at home. Yes, I'll bake a cake now and then...but I generally only do that if we're having guests because I don't want the leftovers available to eat all week.

I don't eat certain foods too late, if they're going to disrupt my sleep pattern. For instance, I love a piece of dark chocolate now and then, but if I eat it after 8:00 at night, I will be awake for hours and won't be able to fall asleep. Everyone's body is different. Listen to yours.

Those are just a few of my rules...and I'm not saying that you have to follow any of them. But having a few basic rules that you believe in will help you stay on track with your health goals.

6. Then, give yourself some rules for eating out. I'm a bit more lenient with my eating rules when I eat out...but this is only because I don't eat out very often. I will say that when my daughter and I eat out, we often each get a side salad or soup...and split the main meal, especially in the restaurants that give huge portions. I generally DO get dessert when we're at a nice sit-down restaurant, and depending on the size, sometimes I'll split that as well with my daughter or husband. I still get to indulge, but without all the calories and sugar.

A friend of mine LOVES fast food...but only allows herself to do so once every two weeks.

Another friend of mine orders a meal and asks the waiter or waitress to put half in a take-out box and half on her plate to eat right away. Her doctor told her she has to eat smaller portions, and doing this helps her do that more easily.
