  Organizing Thought of the Day

Day 5: Organize Your Way to Better Health

The topic of 'getting organized' relates to every single aspect of your life...your home, family, schedule, finances, social life, education, career, retirement, relationships...EVERYTHING. This week, I've been zoning in on organizing your way to better health. Today is DAY 5, the last day, of a 5-day series.

9. Work on ONE new habit. Being organized is about forming 'better ways' and practicing them daily until they become habits. In other words, we do them, without even thinking of them. They become part of us. But no matter what goals you're working on, trying to do too many at once is counterproductive for most people.

Begin with one habit to focus on. Do it consistently every single day. Like perhaps you're used to drinking a Mountain Dew every single day. You don't even think about not drinking that soda. It has become a habit. You then begin training your mind to become more mindful. Instead of grabbing for that soda next time, you drink a water infused with lemon or lime. Maybe it doesn't taste as good to you...maybe it's not as satisfying to you...but you know it's better for you. You then begin working on positive affirmations about that water and about yourself. And you do this for two to three weeks. That's a focused effort.

But if you're working on eliminating soda, AND adding new exercise goals, AND adding new meditation goals, AND adding new stretching goals, AND refining your sleep goals, etc. etc., chances are, you're going to get overwhelmed and stop working on ALL of those goals.

Work on one new habit at a time, and give it a fighting chance. You'll be more likely to succeed...and more likely to achieve subsequent goals.

10. Recognize that, sometimes, going 'cold turkey' works. But more often than not, it doesn't. I remember when I was growing up...my mom smoked. My sister and I begged her, for years, to stop. Then, one day, we watched her throw out her cigarettes, and she never smoked even one day after that. My mother was the type of person who did things on her own terms. It had to be her decision. And when she made a decision, it was law with her.

Still, I know many others who tried to give up a habit 'cold turkey' and were unsuccessful. If you've been doing something for years, it's kind of ingrained in you, so giving it up in one day can be understandably overwhelming.

For instance, a friend of mine decided one day, out of the blue, to go from eating a consistent 3,500 calorie diet to a 1,200 calorie a day plan. She did this for three days and and gave up. She then proceeded to beat herself up, emotionally, for a month afterwards. I remember what an emotionally draining month that was for her...and her family.

Fast forward to her next attempt using a more gradual approach. She began slowly cutting out unhealthy foods day by day, and replacing them with healthier, more nutritious options. She journaled every step of the way. It took her a while to reach her goals, but last time I saw her she looked amazing and said, 'I've never felt healthier and more energetic in my entire life.'

When it comes to your goals...healthy eating or otherwise...it's important to recognize if the 'all or nothing' or 'gradual approach' is right for you, based on your past experiences and successes. I will tell you that, in my experience of helping folks with their many goals...organizing, health, time-management, career, downsizing, etc...most people feel more comfortable and are more successful with mini-goals.

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's task on my July Monthly Organizing Checklist. The July 21 TO DO focuses on your home's windows. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my July Monthly Organizing Checklist.

___ 2. Don't forget to stock up on mosquito repellent. Going to a summer festival or campfire? Yay! Just don't forget the mosquito repellent. Trust me, I'm not a fan of chemicals, but I would not go out at night, when the mosquitos are biting, without repellant. I'm a mosquito magnet, and I don't want to be itching and scratching the next day. There are some more natural products available, and if they work to keep those mosquitos away from you/your family, opt for those. They DO work for some people. I've found, for me, only the heavy-duty stuff works. I bring it along if I must be out during those heavy mosquito times of the evening, I use it...and then just shower when I'm back home for the evening.

___ 3. Do this...it gives you something to look forward to. We can all use something to look forward to in our lives. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my Happiness article on this topic.
