  Organizing Thought of the Day

Birthdays: Make Them More Special

Some folks love celebrating their birthdays...the attention, cake, presents, parties, and hoopla. Others hate it...the attention (or not getting any attention), getting older, the big gatherings, or the unwanted surprises. For me, while I don't celebrate another year around the sun with a whole lot of fanfare, I do like my birthday simply because I feel blessed to have one. After all, we don't have that opportunity forever.

To make my birthday more special, I have a list of things I'd like to do today, and I plan to check them off one-by-one.

1. Update my bucket list. Life changes, dreams change, priorities change. A birthday is the perfect time to re-evaluate and refocus. I'll be updating my bucket list and begin focusing today on what I have to do to achieve at least one of those items.

2. Invest time with those I love. Sometimes our day-to-day lives (work, chores, tasks, etc.) get in the way of us remembering to enjoy those we love. So whether it's hanging out with my husband and daughter, Face-timing with my sister, chatting with a friend...I will be investing that quality time today.

3. Go slow. Time goes by in the blink of an eye, especially when we're rushing through it. An hour or two of reading a good book (or audio book), walking through the garden, listening to music, doing a crossword puzzle...these are all activities that force us to slow down. Enjoy the moment at hand, rather than rushing to the next one. I look forward to 'slowing down time' today.

4. Choose a 'theme' word for the year ahead. Every year, I come up with one word that encapsulates my focus for the year ahead. Last year, it was ACTION...and everything I did centered around that. It was a great word and I got a ton done. Some other possibilities are: Learn, Explore, Compassion, Energy, Grateful, Mindful, Creative, and Serenity.

5. Feel the love. Whenever someone wishes me 'happy birthday' in person, on social media, in a text message, etc. I allow myself the time to feel the love. That person took the time to think of me...and that's pretty awesome in itself.
