Organizing Thought of the Day

Take a Break from the Noise in Your Life
|
Yesterday, I stopped by a neighbor's house to bring some mail for her that was
inadvertently left in my mailbox by mistake. When she opened the door, I could
hear a lot of background noise...her two dogs were barking, three young children
were happily running and shouting, and the television was blaring. While we
exchanged pleasantries, she excused herself for a moment to shout into her
house, 'Stop running and turn off the TV...I can't even hear myself think!' And
then she quietly said to me, 'I'm so sorry...it's a circus here today.'
I get it. Life is just noisy sometimes. Still, if you don't remove yourself
from the noise, or quiet some of the noise when you can, it can be stressful.
I used to work in New York. That is a noisy city. Car horns, construction
equipment, subway trains, busses, public demonstrations, music, people...while I
loved working there, coming home to peace and quiet at the end of the day was
always something I welcomed.
While external stimuli is OK now and then, perhaps even exciting, a constant
stream of it isn't good for our ears, minds, productivity levels, or overall
health.
If you find yourself surrounded by noise more often than you'd like, block
out time on your calendar to simply enjoy some silence.
A long walk in a quiet park (or sitting on a park bench) can do wonders to
release some tension.
Grab a book and find yourself a quiet nook in your home to savor it...even if
just for 20 minutes.
Meditate or do a relaxing exercise class. I teach Zumba and Pound Fitness...two
very loud fitness classes. I welcome quiet, slow time in my life to journal,
sit and think, or do a more relaxing fitness class like Body Flow...a mixture
of Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates.
If you work in a job that's noisy, escape for a few moments when you can...to a
quiet conference room, outdoors, or even to sit in your car if you must do that
to briefly give yourself a quiet reprieve.
On some nights, skip TV. Play cards with your significant other, scrapbook,
draw, or engage in another quiet, peaceful activity that you like doing.
Taking a break from the noise in your life is a good thing, as well as an
important component in a happy, healthy, organized life.

their lives. Once you know and apply these actions, you'll be able to harness

'Sometimes, it's important to turn off the noise from the outside world.
Sometimes, it's critical to stop the banter even within oneself. Intentional
solitude and quiet can make us strong for tomorrow.' (David Paul Kirkpatrick)
