Ask Maria:
Cleaning a Suede Jacket

A GON Reader Asked:

Dear Maria,

I have a suede jacket for years and absolutely love it. It needs cleaning, but I can't afford to bring it to the cleaners, as the cost to clean it is more than what I paid for the jacket. Besides, I'm not so sure the dry cleaners will do such a great job. Please advise. Thank you.

--Ann Lall, Miller Place, NY

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Ann,

I love suede, and it's really important to take care of it along the way because cleaning it can be a bit tricky. Does your jacket need general cleaning, stain removal, a little of both, or a lot of both? That's how you can decide what method(s) you're going to try.

If you're just looking to do some general cleaning (and not trying to remove a stain), use a suede brush and brush over the entire jacket. Doing so will help loosen dirt and debris...and will likely give your jacket a better look overall.

If you have to remove a stain, use a suede brush. Apply some gentle pressure to the stained area and move the brush back and forth to try to loosen the stain. Don't press too hard though. If that doesn't work, you can try a suede eraser.

If there is a sweat stain, sprinkle a thin layer of cornstarch on the stain, allow it to sit overnight, and then use your suede brush to remove the cornstarch...which helps to soak up sweat (or oil).

Get yourself a suede cleaning kit so you have the cleaning tools you need.

Believe it or not, many folks use the washing machine to clean their suede jackets, even though many manufacturers don't recommend doing this. There are many videos on this topic online. That being said, I will caution you that there is a chance that, if you do this, it may not work out in your favor. Water removes the natural oils, may remove dye, and may cause it to shrink. Still, if the jacket is so dirty that you no longer wear it and you feel it's beyond what a professional cleaning can accomplish, then it may be worth a last-ditch effort. Be sure you use special suede detergent if you choose this cleaning method.

That all being said, since you love this jacket, it may be worth the money to get it professionally cleaned, expensive as doing so is, especially if it has developed an odor or has significant stains. Be sure you use a dry cleaner that specializes in cleaning leather/suede. Otherwise, it may be time to go shopping and replace it, as hard as that might be.

Good luck and please keep me posted on what you decide to do...and the result of that decision!
